Designer Yuri Suzuki on DJing at London nightclub Shunt

I used to be studying in London, and there was this fantastic venue called Shunt in London Bridge, like, that was kind of a theater group, a massive kind of space. I don’t know, it used to be a kind of bank facility or something, just an enormous space, and every weekend, Thursday to Saturday, they would open to the theater performances, DJing, and so on. That was one of my best memories in London because that time, I was sort of a poor student in a way, like having to worry about, like, my payment for rent and stuff, so that time hugely helped because Shunt hired me for DJing every weekend from Thursday to Saturday, so I used to do that, kind of like, seven or seven-and-a-half hours of DJing every weekend. But it’s just incredible to hear sort of like, you know, the enormous acoustics and that space is quite like, stick on the memory a lot actually. It was sort of like, for me, what utopia is in a way, like, you know I had never seen that kind of space in my life, so I was so excited to go every weekend. And then... So the DJ space is kind of the main space, has got a really big kind of open space in there, has a speaker, and quite high ceilings. Once you play sound, it’s kind of echoing like crazy. And also, sometimes like, a theater performance was happening on the ceiling as well, people hanging and they’re kind of, you know, dancing on the stairs, so just an absolutely strange cabaret kind of setting. So yeah, I think it’s such a good memory because, yeah, I do sort of like adjusting to the music for the night, from more standard disco music to more techno and it’s really creative and quite openly nice I think.
