I think one of the things that fuels my creativity the most is music.
Dance floors generally, but more specifically The Dance Floor at Tuesday Club,
which was a club night run through the University of Sheffield.
And a really distinct memory I have is of Mary Anne Hobbs
coming to play Dance Floor that evening.
This was 2006, 2007. All of us were kind of enamored with
and taken by the sound of dubstep in its kind of early iteration.
Some had made the pilgrimage to Mass in South London
or FWD>> or SubDub in Leeds.
But in Sheffield we didn’t have something that we went to regularly,
and Tuesday Club became that place,
alongside playing hip-hop, funk, jazz, whatever.
But I remember this one time Mary Anne Hobbs came
and she played a tune called “Sidewinder”
which I think is a Wiley track from his Eskiboy iteration.
And it was just the real moment of convergence
between different sounds that I’d grown up with,
garage, grime, the MC culture of hip-hop a little bit.
And I just remember the dance floor that night.
That’s a really strong memory that I draw on frequently
when I’m writing about music and through music,
because I try and get at an embodied sensation of music
and there are certain tunes that when they come on,
they just take my body over.
So, that’s the main thing I remember,
just like people’s limbs moving in all directions
and just a sense of freedom I suppose,
in the midst of that very ostensibly sanitized space.
